12 healthcare executives crossed Portugal in the first international study tour of the Brazilian Society of Geriatrics and Gerontology.
To find out how Portugal has responded to the challenges posed by aging, the Brazilian Society of Geriatrics and Gerontology (SBGG) has partnered with Dialog Health to offer a week of technical visits to the best Portuguese practices and innovations in support of longevity.

Thus, from 1st to 6th December the technical expedition The Reinvention of the 60+ in Portugal was carried out. With the support from Dialog Health, 12 SBGG delegates crossed through Portugal stopping by the cities of Porto, Aveiro, Coimbra and Lisbon.

The Brazilian delegation consisted of ten geriatric doctors and two occupational therapists, who came from different states: São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais, Bahia and Rondônia. Some of them work in the public service or the private sector, others are linked to state or federal universities.

Innovative consortiums such as Porto4Ageing, nursing homes and residential groups such as Luz Saúde, and well-known health promotion structures such as AFID were part of the effervescent Portuguese scene that was explored.

Among the programs discovered were the fight against loneliness and isolation of the elderly who have little or no family support. There are cases where they combine monitoring technology with the presence of volunteers participating in social support of the elderly. These initiatives have delayed and even avoided institutionalization.

A member of the group, Dr. Wilson Jacob Filho, director of the Geriatric Service of the Clinical Hospital of the Medical School of the Sao Paulo University, comments that Brazilian geriatricians and occupational therapists return to Brazil with various ideas, which do not depend on equipment, of exceptional structures or expertise.

Dr. Jacob Filho continues: "I see a country concerned with these issues and very well equipped. I came with people from Brazil I already knew and admired. And I met people who had the opportunity to be friends and discover potential partners."

The delegates return to Brazil excited to reinforce their daily practices and projects under development, with new supporters in Brazil and in Portugal.
