47 Japanese aged care executives took part to the first Aging Japan virtual study tour to the Netherlands. The participants were able to immerse themselves in two pre-recorded digital study tours based on the internationally recognized best practices of the Dutch aged care system in:
  • Pennemes, a green care home located near Amsterdam
  • iZi, a living lab supporting elderly people staying at home in The Hague

These digital case studies gave them invaluable insights in innovative best practices around nature-based innovations and the use of new technologies. The two ends of the innovation-spectrum that meet in two very human-centered organizations.

On March 16th, the participants met for a digital roundtable where they had the opportunity to talk with the Dutch experts about their good practices and to share their own roadmaps. Here are the key take-away of this rich and honest discussion:

  • The power of breaking down barriers through technologies, nature, music…*
- Be bold and help people going out of their comfort zone
- Value (measured) risk
- Take super small steps, one at a time, to lead teams toward a new reality and create a sense of pride
- Change the discussion: don't ask if people want to change (they usually don't…) but ask them how you can help them deal with the change

  • Broadening connections
- Among our communities… our residents, staff, neighbours, retired friends, students…
- Around shared topics of interest such as sustainability and the future of earth, taking care of pets…
- Among older adults sharing similar problems, for example social isolation
- Among innovators in Japan
  • Continuous Learning
- For older adults having to learn to use new technologies and new ways of life.
- For families and friends who can reconnect with their social roles by supporting them and helping others.
- For healthcare professionals learning new practices and changing habits.
- For us, pioneers, by discovering how our peers are innovating around the world (taking part to eJourneys :) and sharing the lessons we learnt with sincerity and passion.
