About the Study Tour
LASA invites its members and colleagues to join this inaugural LASA International program in partnership with Global Ageing Network (GAN) - DIALOG's International Leadership Program.
Following the Royal Commission's focus on keeping seniors in their own homes as they age, this international program is specifically focused on Home Care and Hospital in the Home in France.
The tour also includes the option to explore the Spanish aged care system through a program of visits in Barcelona, and to attend European Ageing Network (EAN) 2-day summit in beautiful Alicante, joining with GAN colleagues from around the globe.
The tour will be hosted by a Global Ageing Network Board member.
Following several voluntarist policies, France has developed a structured network to care for its seniors
The French health and social care system is one of universal health and social care largely financed by national funding. In its 2000 assessment of world health care systems, the World Health Organization found that France provided the "close to best overall health care" in the world. Since then, the French Healthcare system has faced multiple challenges: an aging population, the rise of chronic diseases and financial constraints. Following several voluntarist policies, France has developed a structured network to care for its seniors. Home care is very dynamic and the housing facilities are being modernized to meet the challenges of great age.
Spain has a rapidly aging population, thus a growing number of people in need of senior care in Spain. Currently Spain is the country with the most rapidly aging population in Europe. Over the last 20 years, the part of the population that is over 75 has doubled in size. 18% of the total population is over 65 and this number is growing 3% annually. . With a declining birth rate, decreasing immigration and longer life expectancy this adds up to an increase in number of seniors and a decrease in total population. This means that the percentage of seniors of total population will increase rapidly and presents big challenges for the country.
Through our program of visits, you will explore strengths and challenges of both the French and Spanish seniors care systems - with a focus on at Home hospitals and Home Care in France. You will get an overview of both countries' geriatric pathways and discover innovations in practice. Our study tour will give you the opportunity to find how France and Spain's healthcare systems tackle the challenge of helping elderly people live normal, independent lives.
